About the Role:
 

Reporting to the Senior Design Director, the Design Specialist is responsible for contributing to the Design team while ensuring procedures and best practices are followed. The incumbent manages and provides input into the design process with respect to initial strategy and developing the overarching design philosophy, and is accountable for ensuring the Design team is meeting compliance and contractual obligations as well as identifying, managing, and mitigating risk. This includes meeting with the owner or other stakeholders to advance the design in compliance with the contract requirements and chairing the meetings with the Design team and the owner, guiding the process to ensure Graham is meeting the clients’ needs and the designers are delivering a minimally-complaint, cost-effective solution. 
 

As a Design Specialist for Graham you will:
 

  • Participate in design consultations and the development of teaming agreements and design service agreements
  • Manage consultants to ensure they are providing a level of service consistent with the TA, DSA, and industry standards
  • Oversee / monitor design production and ongoing design efforts
  • Validate that design is minimally compliant, competitive, cost-effective, and constructible
  • Manage direct reports
  • Interface with the Bid team and Project Execution team to ensure coordination of team efforts
  • Ensure major design items such as net area, gross up factors, material quantities (such as glass, cladding, etc.), and material types aren't exceeding the desired level, and manage variances accordingly
  • Liaise with the Procurement and Construction teams to ensure they are maintaining compliance and contractual obligations, and notify them of risks as they arise
  • Oversee Design team and ensure they resolve technical queries and requests for information
  • Monitor clash-detection processes for Design, and ensure deliverables are submitted on time
  • Audit the design documents against the requirements and ensure they are complete and meet industry quality standards
  • Notify Commercial Manager of any contract variances to the performance specifications, as well as variances to the original budget
  • Review the design documents to ensure quality and take immediate action to resolve quality issues and/or variances
  • Manage design schedule in conjunction with the master project schedule and ensure deliverables are submitted accordingly
  • Manage the client with issues regarding design
  • Manage partner trades by ensuring an appropriate amount of participation in design strategy discussions and workshops
  • Ensure the Design Management team is following Graham policies and procedures and lead the team in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in monthly budget forecasts and quantify design risk

 

Qualifications / Experience:
 

  • Completion of a university program in a technical, business, or scientific field of study; degree in Engineering or Architecture is an asset
  • LEED, PMP, and P.Eng designations are assets
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience working as PC, PM, CM, or Technical Manager on projects of $10M-$100M
  • Experience working on level 3 projects
  • Experience in projects related to the division supporting
  • Experience working for a design builder
  • Knowledge of design-build procurement methods
  • Strong negotiating and influencing skills
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and BIM software tools (Navisworks 3D and 4D, REVIT)
  • Experience with ACONEX and Revizto is an asset
  • Experience managing Design Risk

 

Compensation:

 

  • $97,100 to $133,500 per annum
  • Salary will commensurate with education and experience

  • 3 to 5 weeks of vacation per year, with credit for prior industry experience
