General Foreman

Summary Reporting to the Superintendent 2 / Project Manager, the General Foreman assists and supports field operations from initial project planning to completion, and is responsible for implementing plans from their Superintendent and Project Manager with respect to project activities, including the supervision of self-performed and subcontracted construction work. The incumbent focuses on the execution of the work, and is engaged directly with all trades and sub trades, serving as a communicator between the Superintendent / Project Manager and the working foreman to ensure that project milestones are translated meaningfully to the crews. The incumbent is responsible for effectively leading, managing, maintaining, and disciplining subordinates professionally and objectively, and is aware of which issues they are able to manage themselves and which issues need to be escalated.



  • Organize, directs and supervises employees engaged in specific functions on construction projects
  • Works to complete his portion of the project on time and on budget
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the Superintendent / Project Manager
  • Assigns work to carpenters
  • Takes an active role in assigning of field personnel
  • Monitors and addresses cost and labour performance of construction projects in conjunction with the Superintendent / Project Manager
  • Carries out the implementation of management decisions such as construction methods, schedule, quality and safety
  • Leads weekly meetings
  • Reads and interprets drawings, blueprints and specifications
  • Assists with the preparation of execution plans, ITP’s, safe work plans, work assignments etc.
  • Assists with performance management of workforce


Education, Experience and Knowledge

  • 3+ years of construction experience and some work leadership is required. Depending upon the project size, scope, and complexity the years of experience may vary.
  • Basic knowledge of construction disciplines, cost control, scheduling, safety regulations and engineering.
  • Ability to read drawings and specifications, and develop a schedule from the information.
  • Proficient sub trade management skills.
  • Commitment to quality and safety, and ability to evaluate project related processes and make necessary changes to meet and exceed internal and external customer expectations.
  • Knowledge of contract risk management.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Human Resources and Labour Resources.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite.
  • Proficient using scheduling and project management software

The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects. The position requires good manual dexterity and multilimbed coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.
