About The Role:

The Technical Specialist, Insurance serves as a subject matter expert, providing specialized guidance and in-depth technical expertise to support the design, execution, and ongoing management of Graham’s insurance program. As a key resource, the role supports both day-to-day and escalated matters such as coverage interpretation, contractual risk allocation, and claims strategy.

The Technical Specialist supports the Director by contributing to strategic insurance decisions, monitoring industry developments and regulatory changes, and building team capability through mentoring and technical training.

 

Essential Functions:

 

Technical Expertise

  • Participate in complex contract reviews and project specific risk assessments and contract reviews, providing technical guidance on risk-related contract provisions, risk transfer strategies, coverage structure, and appropriate risk controls to mitigate uninsurable risk exposures.
  • Supporting the development and resolution complex or disputed claim, providing input on claims strategy, coverage interpretations, reserve adequacy, and settlement negotiations
  • Conduct due diligence on risk and insurance issues for M&A transactions.
  • Prepare technical analyses to support coverage placements inclusive of traditional insurance and captive insurance placements, and recommend appropriate coverage structure, limits, terms, and retention levels.
  • Assist with the preparation and validation of exposure data, insurance applications, loss runs, and any other data or documentation required to be provided to any underwriters in connection with the renewal of the company’s corporate insurance program.

Technical Coaching & Leadership

  • Act as a resource for the Director, providing technical insight and subject matter expertise that informs strategic decisions, insurance program structure, and stakeholder communications.
  • Provide guidance, direction and coaching to the risk management team by developing technical resources and learning materials, sharing insights from industry developments, and facilitating risk managing training sessions.
  • Provide training, education, and ongoing support to project and operational teams on risk and insurance matters
  • Support the Director by contributing to budgeting, resource planning, employee performance evaluations and development goals

Insurance Program Strategy Support

  • Monitor insurance program effectiveness, claims trends, market dynamics, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to identify gaps or inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development of strategic initiatives such as expanding coverage lines, refining risk appetite, or evaluating alternative risk financing structures.

Stakeholder Engagement & Governance

  • Build strong relationships with corporate and operational teams to support compliance, enhance insurance awareness, and improve the overall effectiveness of the insurance program.
  • Perform quality control audits by reviewing insurance policy documentation, endorsements, and coverage structures for accuracy, consistency, and alignment with binding instructions
  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of smarter tools that improve the efficiency and accuracy of policy management, claims tracking, and compliance monitoring.
  • Assist the Director in developing and implementing insurance-related policies, procedures, and internal controls to promote consistency and enable risk-informed decision-making across the organization.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in commercial insurance with an emphasis on complex construction-related risks.
  • Professional designations such as CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional), CRM (Canadian Risk Management), or FCIP (Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional) are highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of the Canadian and U.S construction insurance market and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and procuring corporate insurance placements and project-specific insurance programs (e.g., CCIP, OCIP, wrap-ups),
  • Experienced in analyzing and negotiating construction contracts to ensure effective risk allocation and optimize insurance-based risk transfer
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in coverage interpretation and contractual risk allocation.
  • Familiarity with captive insurance programs and M & A due diligence is an asset.
  • Proven ability to provide guidance and coaching to the risk management team with a focus on building technical insurance expertise within the team
  • Adept at communicating technical insurance matters to non-insurance stakeholders, including operations, legal, finance, and executive leadership.
  • Experience in developing and implementing insurance-related policies, internal controls, and compliance monitoring tools.
